Dust Bath

Why do some animals roll around in the dust? It is generally associated with grooming.

A horse, zebra or any large animal rolling around in the dust is inspiring. The dust exploding around it offers a nice backdrop to the subject. I’m always more interested in depicting an animal doing something that’s in character, but not that you often see. It’s normal to see a zebra standing, possibly with its head down feeding, but you don’t often see one rolling around and kicking up dust and that’s exciting for me. It’s that excitement that I’ve wanted to capture here.
