Portraiture has always been of interest to me. When we first arrived in England, it was how I started off my art career. One of the first paintings I sold was a portrait. So they are still something I do often and really enjoy.
This is one of a series of portraits that I was commissioned to do by Stellenbosch University – individuals that had importance, influence and are celebrated there.
My portrait techniques vary a great deal. This particular one and the whole series I did for Stellenbosch were very linear, quite loose and focusing on the features of the individual’s face against a plain background. Other portraits I do are a lot more detailed and elaborate, often including environments and objects that relate to or describe the subject.
