I like to paint sleeping figures. Of course, it helps that the subject remains still for quite a while but also remains exactly who they are, not trying to project anything or put on a show. There is a naturalness about them and it is this relaxed feeling that I have tried to portray in this piece. I have blurred the face of the subject slightly to indicate the time lapse that happens when one sleeps. I didn’t want to freeze the scene, but rather convey a sense of time. Underneath everything, the subject is thinking and dreaming. The slight distortion in perspective is also an attempt to convey the surreal condition of sleep.
