This is a South African Xhosa woman dressed in her typical traditional dress. I was walking down Jubilee Square in Simon’s Town, Cape Town and this woman was lounging on a step selling wooden and stone curio sculptures of birds and animals. My first thought was how striking she was, sitting in the light, and I decided I would paint real birds around her instead of her curios.
