The World of Birds is the largest bird park in Africa. It boasts 3000 birds of different species. My visits to this sanctuary are always inspirational – both from an artistic point of view and out of admiration and appreciation for the work being done there to protect these magnificent creatures. There is a little enclosure at the park where you can sit and have tea while birds wander freely around you. In this painting I wanted to create an environment that looks natural enough, but conveys an artificial appearance at the same time. The interaction and sometimes bizarre connections that humans have with animals is a theme I return to often in my work. This piece inspires the question – what is a woman, a pelican, a goose, a mallard duck, an egret and a parrot all doing sitting quietly together?
